Welcome to Pera Palace Istanbul
It’s 6 am in the morning and after a long flight from New York we have finally arrived in Istanbul. I’m watching the grey and rainy panorama through the taxi window and thinking of all the places I want to see in the unique city where Europe meets Asia.
As we arrive to the hotel, polite gentlemen in dove grey uniforms greet us murmuring “Welcome to Pera Palace Istanbul”. The sweet benefits of business travel, you get to stay in some of the worlds most amazing hotels and this is one of them. First opened in 1892 it was the most glamorous and elegant hotel in Istanbul, loved by local and international celebrities like Kemal Ataturk, Ernest Hemingway, Agatha Christie and later Greta Garbo and Alfred Hitchcock. Now the faded beauty has been restored by 4 years long and 30 million $ worth of renovation. And it looks and feels amazing!
Pera Palace Istanbul
White marble steps, Carrara marble columns, Murano glass chandeliers and 6 domes made out of turquoise glass – the main floor is the heart of Pera Palace. The hotel has been important piece of history. It’s Turkey’s first building, outside of the Ottoman palaces, to have electricity, the country’s first hotel to provide hot running water, and its first hotel (and the second one in Europe) to have an electric elevator, which is still running. The hotel still contains 198 original pieces of furniture, and most rooms, no matter the category, have one of them.
Pera Palace Istanbul is known for their glamorous english tea afternoons, a speciality here thats accompanied by music played on Schiedmayer grand piano. Serving tea, crepes, cakes and sandwiches every day between 3pm and 6pm. We are lucky to enjoy the hotel while they are dressing in up for the upcoming holidays, Christmas trees and fresh flowers gives this place a magical and festive feel.
Across from the reception is the elegant Patisserie de Pera, pastel pink candy land that make the most delicious sweets, tiny tarts and french macaroons. It’s a great place to try the turkish coffee and indulge in one of the gorgeously looking and tasting cakes. For the Christmas season they have decorated the entrance with a real size gingerbread house made out of (yes I tried it) real gingerbread.
Istanbul, I’m so looking forward to discover more of your beauty! Located in the heart of the Beyoglu district, Pera Palace Hotel is a wonderful base to explore this city..
